Finance and accounting

7 questions for accounting, FP&A and controller roles. The italic line under each one is what it is actually testing.

  1. Confirm their role and what they owned in the close.Ownership of the close is a precise, checkable claim.
  2. Did they ever find an error that was inconvenient to report? The heart of the role. Listen for whether they raised it anyway.
  3. How did they respond to an auditor's finding?Defensiveness here is a meaningful signal.
  4. Were their working papers something someone else could pick up?Reviewability is most of the job.
  5. How did they behave when a number they produced was challenged?Looking for 'showed the working', not 'defended the answer'.
  6. Did they handle anything requiring segregation of duties?Establishes the real control environment they worked in.
  7. Is there any reason you would hesitate to give them access to systems of record?Direct, and fair to ask.
Before you dial. Ask the candidate for the reference and tell them you intend to call. Confirm the reference's relationship to the work. Nothing here asks about protected characteristics, and you should not go there if a reference volunteers it — steer back to the work and do not write it down.
