Healthcare and clinical support

7 questions for clinical and patient-facing staff. The italic line under each one is what it is actually testing.

  1. Can you confirm their role, dates, and whether they held it in the capacity stated?Confirm the facts first; licensure and credentials get verified separately at the source.
  2. How did they handle a shift that went badly?Composure under load is the job.
  3. Describe their documentation. Timely, accurate, complete?Charting quality is a hard, checkable signal and a real risk area.
  4. How did they escalate when something was outside their scope?Knowing the edge of your scope and saying so is a safety behaviour.
  5. How did patients and families respond to them?Ask for an example rather than an adjective.
  6. How did they work with colleagues under time pressure?Handover failures are where harm happens.
  7. Is there anything that would give you pause about them working unsupervised?Asked neutrally, this invites a real answer without inviting speculation.
Before you dial. Ask the candidate for the reference and tell them you intend to call. Confirm the reference's relationship to the work. Nothing here asks about protected characteristics, and you should not go there if a reference volunteers it — steer back to the work and do not write it down.
